FUZZ UPDATE

The other day I went to a "Look Good Feel Better" Session -- a two hour, hands on workshop that included lessons on makeup and ways to deal with hair loss. The wonderful woman who is a volunteer teacher for the course and recommended it to me said I should go "sooner than later." Apparently, the other ladies there didn't get that same advice, as they were all almost done with their treatment, and quite bald, (and way older than I am.) A bit shocking, but hey. I did get a ton of free makeup, (which brings up my household makeup quota to pretty much nothing+ a ton.) I think the other teacher of the course was a bit exasperated with me because I was so clueless-- ("clarifier? where does that go again?") I think I blew it in the beginning when we were talking about foundation and she complimented me on my use of it... "Uh, I don't wear makeup," I told her sheepishly.
But it is a really amazing program, and, among other things, I learned how to draw on eyebrows, which will come in super-handy when I don't have any. Plus they showed us some really cool things to do with half a t-shirt wrapped around your head. Who knew?
Speaking of hair, I still have all of mine (the short version anyway). I wake up every morning wondering if this will be the day that it starts to fall out in clumps and I'll just go ahead and shave it all off. At most I have another week. But I've enjoyed the short doo... lots of extra time in the morning, and now Liam has had to resort to trying to pull off my lips since he can't yank out my hair. Along those lines, I'm on a leg-shaving boycott because I mean really, I might as well take advantage of something about this. Jim is fairly horrified about this ("we'll have to change the sheets," he mutters). Something else I learned at that class is that your nose-hairs fall out, (I know, TMI-- sorry) and apparently this wrecks havoc on the allergies. Yet another "who knew" nugget (but happily not of the "WHAAA???!!" variety.) Jim keeps telling me I should take up swimming because I'll be so "sleek" (although I remind him that I could have more-easily achieved the same effect with the right kind of swim suit), but I digress...
So, in any event, it good program and the ladies looked great when they left. If you need any blue eyeshadow, please let me know-- (but I'm keeping the eyebrow pencil).

nose hairs, huh? who'd a thunk? did they show you how to draw on lips after Liam pulls them off? I have to say the absence of need to shave your legs would be nice, but without leg hairs what will you shoot at your enemies as you wander the streets of Denver? oh yes, your radioactive boobs ought to do the trick, no problem.
Did you ever know that you're my hero?
Love you,
Meghan

Maybe you have a temporary future in female bodybuilding. You know, one of those tan, oily, muscle-bound (and TOTALLY hair-free) women! I suppose Jim would be complaining of body oil on the sheets then (or would he?). :)

I guess you'll get a reprieve from the Hobbit feet, too, for a while...no wait, that's my feet, sorry.

Ah well, love to hear/read you laughing about it all.

So what happens to the other half of the t-shirt that you don't use to adorn your head? Does that become a scarf or belt to compliment the outfit? I'm worried about the use of blue eye shadow as well -unless you go buy a Bonnie-Bell Lip Smacker and some clothes from Old Navy (which resemble pastel clothing I wore as kid which wasn't trendy at the time but apparently now it is), I think you should leave that for your Halloween costume (you could be Mimi from the Drew Carey Show). Or, you should use the eye shadow and buy a wig resembling your favorite Charlie's Angel character (not Bosley or Charlie) and look really retro. My neighbor (a bit unstable, very pretencious, and every bit Hollywood as the cover of a People Magazine) actually has her eyebrows "inked" at a spa - I think it is like a henna tatoo. This makes filling them in with an eyebrow pencil really easy (sort of like paint by numbers). Well, I've digressed way to much. But if you do find out what clarifier is, let me know (as I don't own that either).

Take Care,

If guys can grow out their beards and get away with giving us painful kisses once in a while, then I say hurrah for hairy legged women!

Speaking of make-up...my friend Kelly in Boston was in a wedding of a friend in NH - and a family member was doing all the women's hair and make-up as a present to the bride. Apparently this family member lived on the other side of the tracks (there is one in every town, right?) and liked BIG hair (Dolly Parton's hair looks limp in comparison) and BIG make-up (Tammy Faye-esque). No one knew it beforehand and when they looked in the mirror to the pleased "voila!" from the family member, they were a bit shocked to say the least. The best part is that when she walked down the aisle, she did a little wave to her fiancee, who promptly turned to their friend and asked who she was! Needless to say, when they got married, Scott insisted that he be able to recognize her when she came down the aisle.

Keep on smiling!

Hey Cari,

I usually think of our bodies as perfect. Everything for a reason & a reason for everything. Without nose hairs, allergy problems. Without hair on your head, cold head or sunburn.

But what about all the other hairs? I mean, what are eyebrows for anyway? And hairs on our upper lip? Not to mention hair on our legs - that we are encouraged (esp by the male variety) to shave anyway.

Sounds like a good class. Glad you're in the know about eyebrow pencils.

How are you feeling this week? Every day I think of you and hope you are feeling a little better than yesterday. And I'm so proud of you for your strength and bravery. I'm lucky to have you for a friend.

Carolyn,

Just thought I would drop you a note and let you know I still read your blog every week.

I have shaved my head for the last six years (usuaully for halloween) in honor of my cousin who passed away with luekemia when we were 12. And I still rub it for a week each time.

Keep blogging. It keeps life in prespective for the rest of us.

Erin go Bragh!!! Hope you're all having a fab St. Pat's day...Guinness or no.
When my neighbor showed up with six Biere de Mars (from Ft. Collins, no less), I figured it was meant to be. :)

Since some of us are Irish and Scottish all the time, here's an old Irish blessing for the day:

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

love,
bmc :)

Yes, the loss of the nose hairs is quite interesting. You end up walking around with tissue in all your pockets. Of course you forget about them and end up washing and drying them. I usually remember about the tissue in my pocket when I open up the dryer and see the bits & pieces all over my clothes. Thank goodness I can blame "chemo brain"!

I've had my fourth treatment and I still have eyebrows but there is a big gap on the right one. I look like I experienced an over-zealous wax job. Thank goodness my wig has long bangs so I don't have to fix this right now! I haven't lost the hair on my arms yet either - go figure. But otherwise, I am *V*E*R*Y* sleek.

I've also learned that with this "sleek" look, my skin has become very dry. Slathering lotion on my body twice a day is barely keeping up with the dry skin issue, especially my feet and heels. So stock up on your favorite lotions, use them constantly and luxuriate in the scent and feel of your soft and sleek body!

I am keeping you in my thoughts,

Pam in FL

I'm thrilled to hear of someone going to a LGFB session and enjoying it so. I have heard of these several times being an ACS volunteer and knowing some of the Relay funding goes toward paying for them and wondered if they are well attended and if the women who do utilize them like them. Just like the Navigator program and Road to Recovery, though, sometimes I don't think ACS gets the word out about their programs enough!
